Sadly, baby bottle tooth decay is a common dental issue among many infants and toddlers. This causes severe pain and discomfort and an altered oral health. If you want your child to have a strong and beautiful smile, then you need to do all you can to prevent baby bottle tooth decay.
To help you keep your child free from this issue, Dr. Nicholas A. Jamison II and our dental team have some tips and tricks for you.
Clean and strengthen the chompers
At the beginning of your child’s life when they don’t have any teeth, it’s best to wipe their gums with a clean, wet washcloth after each meal. When their first tooth erupts from the gums, brush it once a day. As you brush, use a child-sized, soft-bristled toothbrush and water. You can use a pea-sized amount of toothpaste when they turn 2 years old. Once two teeth grow in next to each other, floss between those two teeth daily. To make sure your child’s teeth are strong, expose them to fluoride each day.
Take advantage of dental treatments
Make sure you bring your child into our office to see Dr. Nicholas A. Jamison II once they turn 1 year old or six months after their first tooth grows into place. These appointments will be beneficial because your dentist can correct any dental issues and they can give you the information you need and the answers to any questions you might have.
Avoid sugar
As you may already know, sugar is bad for the teeth, especially because it causes cavities. So, please don’t put sugary liquids in your child’s bottle, and don’t send them to bed with a sugary drink. Also, please don’t dip your child’s pacifier in sugar or honey before giving it to them.
